Call to surrender unlicensed weapons in rural Salem

Names of those who give up weapons will be kept secret

G. Subbulakshmi, Superintendent of Police, urged the people of the villages on the Tamil Nadu – Karnataka border and abutting the reserve forests to surrender to police with immediate effect, all unlicensed arms they possessed.

The police will not file cases against those who surrendered all the unlicensed weapons with immediate effect, Ms. Subbulakshmi said while speaking at a police – public special meeting in Karaikadu village on the Tamil Nadu – Karnataka border on Tuesday.

Intruding into the reserve forests, mining river sand without permission and hunting wild animals in the Karnataka forests were crimes which attracted serious action.

She said that about 25 villages on the Tamil Nadu – Karnataka border fell under the Kolathur Police station limits. According to reports received by the police, many people of these villages are indulging in the illegal act of hunting wild animals.

The villagers possessing unlicensed arms should surrender the same with the Kolathur police within three days. The names of those who surrendered the arms will be kept secret.

The people who are apprehensive of visiting police station, could hand over the arms to the village heads.

The police will conduct house-to-house search after the deadline and legal action under Arms Act will be initiated against those who were found in possession of illegal arms, Ms. Subbulakshmi warned.

The people fishing in river Cauvery in the border areas should possess the licence provided by the Tamil Nadu State Fisheries Department, the SP said.

Ravikumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mettur, presided over the meeting.

M. C. Marappan, Kolathur union Pattali Makkal Katchi secretary, village panchayat presidents Thangavel (Kaveripuram) and Sinnappan (Karungallur) participated in the meeting.

Discussions held

K. Shankar, Inspector General of Police, West Zone, held discussion with the Superintendents of Police of four western districts on crime prevention here on Wednesday.

The SPs G. Subbulakshmi (Salem), S. R. Senthilkumar (Namakkal), J. Loganathan (Dharmapuri) and P. Kannammal (Krishnagiri) participated in the discussions.

The IG directed the police officials to take steps for solving the cases pending for a long time without any further delay. The police should file the needed details on the pending cases in the courts and ensure that the guilty are punished.
