Schalke have revealed that striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar did not suffer a serious injury during their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Huntelaar was forced from the field after coming off worse in a 50-50 challenge during the last-16 clash at the Veltins-Arena and initial reports suggested the 31-year-old could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

But Schalke, who were undone at home by goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo, have revealed the Netherlands international only suffered bruising.

"Huntelaar suffers severe contusion. After the final whistle he was back in the @VELTINSarena," read a post from the club's official Twitter account.

The striker was already set to miss Schalke's Bundesliga game against Werder Bremen on Saturday as he serves the final game of a four-match domestic suspension for a sending-off against Hannover last month.

The former Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan forward was dismissed for a dangerous tackle on midfielder Manuel Schmiedebach in the January 31 encounter.

Huntelaar was initially banned for six league games but Schalke appealed and the suspension was reduced to four matches.
