Video: No show like a ‘Joe show’ – Laois star says Canning played best hurling at Fitzgibbon

Laois star Willie Hyland had no hesitation in selecting Joe Canning as the best Fitzgibbon Cup player he saw.

The Laois forward went as far as to suggest that the star Galway forward left his best hurling for the colleges championship.

Speaking to Independent.ie, sponsors of this year’s Fitzgibbon Cup competition, the former LIT star said that hurling alongside Canning was a pleasure.

Giving his best Fitzgibbon Cup memory, Hyland nominated the Portumna star’s display against UCC for LIT in 2010.  “It was probably the best exhibition of hurling I have seen. The same day you could hardly hold a hurley it was so wet. The hurley was just flying out of your hand and he scored 3-4 from play.

“Richie Foley from Waterford, who was a county hurler at the time was marking him on the same day. There were two guys marking him, double teaming him at times. He just gave a display that I will never forget.”

The Clough-Ballacolla clubman, in the video interview with Independent.ie, recalls his Fitzgibbon years with LIT, which hosts this year’s finals weekend ten years on from winning its first title, also talks about his toughest opponents and another great ‘Joe Show’.
