Video: Beating UL to our first title was the sweetest - LIT boss Davy Fitzgerald
LIT not only has reason to cheer in terms of hosting the Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup finals weekend on Febraury 27th and 28th but it is also 10 years since the first of its two Fitzgibbon Cup wins, the other in 2007.
Ten years ago the institute exploded onto the national colleges scene when it claimed its first title, becoming only the second Institute of Technology to do so.
Current Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald, who 10 years later is still at the helm of LIT, was instrumental in getting the institute to the summit of college’s hurling. He has, in the intervening period, got to manage some of the best hurlers of recent generations, among them Eoin Kelly (Tipperary), Joe Canning and Jackie Tyrell.
We take a trip down memory lane with Fitzgerald, and some other well-known LIT hurling stars, in a three part video series on the Fitzgibbon Cup. We hear from them about the great performances, toughest opponents and some light hearted recollections, starting with the man himself, Davy Fitzgerald, on what the last 10 years has meant.
We start by asking him about his favourite Fitzgibbon Cup memory and, to no great surprise, the 2005 final victory over neighbours UL stands out.
