Jokes ASIDE! Whitefield gets more cash
Rs 46 crore under Centre’s ASIDE scheme in addition to an earlier sanction of Rs 55 crore

After concentrating on the overall development of Whitefield, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike is creating a Rs 55-crore action plan which is all set to get implemented. In this regard, it has already begun civil works by spending Rs 46 crore. The project also includes linking Whitefield through Nellurahalli.

Though there are several alternative roads already being used by commuters, the BBMP has now decided to improve and strengthen existing small roads with financial assistance from the central government. The central government is directly helping BBMP take up improvements, strengthening and asphalting of internal roads around EPIP Zone, Whitefield, under the Assistance to States for Development of Export Infrastructure Scheme (ASIDE).

The central government is contributing Rs 20 crore while BBMP will be pitching in with Rs 26 crore to complete the project in the next tone year. The International Tech Park, Bangalore (ITPB) is the icon of the IT capital and contributes around Rs. 26,000 crore towards the nation’s development. The layout of EPIP, Whitefield, was earlier formed by the KIADB and was handed over to the Whitefield Export Promotion Park Industrial Association (WEPPIA) during August 2009.

KT Nagraj, superintending engineer, BBMP’s Road Infrastructure department, said, “BBMP has planned to develop internal roads to upgrade riding standards, provide drainage, improve footpaths, medians and landscaping under the SEZ in ASIDE scheme.”

He said, “Already, the road widening work has begun at Nellurahalli, Borewell Road and Siddapura Road. Landscaping work is also going on, but we are facing difficulties widening the road into two lanes and into four lanes as property owners are not coming forward to obtain transfer of development rights (TDR). As widened roads will benefit common users of the roads, the same message is being communicated to land owners. We are also trying to convince land owners, but they are not obtaining TDR. However, we also have the option wherein the BBMP commissioner can exercise his power to acquire the land under the Karnataka Municipal Act 1976 (Section 175), which allows him to hold direct negotiations with landowners to acquire land to be used for public benefit.”

When asked about the reason for land owners not obtaining TDR, Nagraj claimed that the land prices were too high in Whitefield area and land owners would be left with no option but to sell the TDRs for not more than Rs 1,000 per sq ft to private persons. The attempt to acquire land has been going on since one year, but still we are confident of convincing them, he added.
