She is only in kindergarten but has earned a reputation as a chess champ in the making.

Four-and-a-half year old Kamalini Haradhana Nimban recently won first prize in the All India FIDE Blitz Rating Chess Tournament held in Goa.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy felicitated the young champ at a function in his chamber the other day.

Nimban, who hails from Vaithikuppam, began playing chess six months ago. She was provided training in her house and later sent to Sri Sathya Sai Chess Academy.

She participated in the under-five-years category and won five rounds out of the nine held in the competition. She was given a gold medal and a cash award of Rs.1,000.

Studying in LKG at Sri Sankara Vidyalaya High School, she was the youngest participant in the competition.

According to the proud family, Nimban had participated in chess competitions even before this event. Her parents Karthikeyan and Madharasi are very supportive and proud of her achievements. They look up to their daughter’s coach Sivakumar to help her bring home more laurels.
