Most wide flatbed medians below flyovers and elevated metro corridors have turned into black spots and eyesores what with garbage being dumped there indiscriminately.
With repeated attempts by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to clear them failing, the civic body is now considering to convert all such flatbed medians below flyovers and metro elevated corridors in the city into single slope concrete barriers.
The issue came up during a review meeting chaired by district in-charge Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy on Wednesday. Many councillors complained that medians below the metro elevated corridors had turned into black spots as garbage and construction debris was being dumped there. Mr. Reddy said that he had noticed this on CMH Road, Magadi Road and below other flyovers.
The agencies have been planting saplings as a way to manage the space. However, even in places where there are plant saplings, people throw garbage in plastic covers and dump construction debris, BBMP officials pointed out.
The Minister suggested that the agencies replace the flatbed medians with single slope concrete barriers so that even if people dump garbage it would slide down the slope onto the road. He has also directed officials to clear the garbage and debris on these medians in a week’s time.
Regarding the maintenance of medians below elevated metro corridors, BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayana said that Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) had only 25-km long median in their jurisdiction and thus, BMRCL should maintain them. The Minister said that he would convene a meeting of councillors of areas with metro corridor along with BMRCL officials to sort out the issue.
