2002 Godhra carnage case: Final hearing begins in HC

Eleven of the convicts were given death sentence whereas 20 others were given life imprisonment by the trial court.

A division bench of Gujarat High Court  on Wednesday began the final hearing of criminal appeals and criminal confirmation cases in the 2002 Godhra train carnage case. In March 2011, a designated court had pronounced its judgment on the case, convicting 31 persons and acquitting 63 persons. Eleven of the convicts were given death sentence whereas 20 others were given life imprisonment by the court, presided over by the trial judge P R Patel then.

Following this, as per the procedure, the cases of 11 persons who have been given death sentence were referred to the HC for the confirmation of the death sentence. Meanwhile, the state government has moved appeals against those acquitted in the case.
At the same time, the convicts have also moved appeals against their conviction before HC.

All these petitions have been clubbed together and are now being heard by the division bench of Justices A S Dave and G R Udhwani.
The criminal confirmation cases and the appeals against the acquittals and convictions were moved in 2011. Further hearing will continue on Thursday.
