NASHIK: The district administration will soon float tenders to procure equipment for disaster management for the Kumbh Mela following the approval of the newly-appointed district collector.
"The district Kumbh committee has finalized the procurement of the equipment for disaster management taking into consideration the quality and other related issues.
I went through the file and had a talk with the officials concerned to get review of the things as they were finalized by predecessor and hence cleared the file after the discussions," Deependrasingh Khushwah, collector of Nashik said.
The collector, after having taken over charge of Nashik on February 9, went through the file on the Rs 12-crore proposal of buying equipment that will arm the district disaster management authority with the state of the art gear to fight disasters and carry out rescue operations at the earliest.
Considering the various geographical conditions as well as industrial development, the district is vulnerable to many kinds of disasters - natural as well as manmade. The hilly areas like Igatpuri, Trimbakeshwar, Surgana, Peth, Chandwad, Saptashrungi and Kasara (though it belongs to Thane district) are vulnerable to landslides, while the areas like Nashik city and Niphad along with several other villages on the banks of the Godavari are prone to flooding.
Nashik also has industrial areas like Ambad, Satpur, the chemical industry belt of Dindori and Sinnar. Besides, there is also a petroleum depot at Manmad where the major oil companies have huge stores set up.
Moreover, the district also has one of the busiest Central Railway route and two national highways in the form of NH-3 (Mumbai Agra) and NH-50 (Nashik-Pune) passing through.
The committee has cleared the purchase of jumping cushions that will save the lives of people who jump down a 15-storey building in case of fire, a mini hydraulic rescue kit capable of lifting or cutting the train bogey in case of accidents, lifting bags set to lift heavy vehicles in cases of accidents in which victims need to be immediately rescued.

"These are some of the important portable equipment that will be bought for Nashik and will be put to use in shortest possible times by the departments concerned in case of disaster strikes anywhere surrounding Nashik. Nashik has got better connectivity to all the vulnerable places in the district as well as to the neighbouring districts," a senior official said.
At a time when heavy equipment takes some time to reach the affected sites, the portable equipment will be able to save lives and rescue people in a far more effective manner.
The tender process will invite bidders to supply equipment along with the training for the staff to demonstrate the manner in which the equipment is handled.
