Village Ups Dengue Fight

Nakama Village, outside Labasa Town is taking a proactive stand against dengue fever.

Led by turaga-ni-koro Sera Matai the village anti-campaign includes youths cleaning drains, cutting grass and planting fresh root crops and vegetables.

“I am not only looking at preventing dengue fever but also making sure that villagers eat healthy food,” she said.

Ms Matai has also invited various government departments to make presentations to the villages on topical issues.

The Ministry of Health was one of the first to make presentations to Nakama villagers. They presented on the effects of marijuana use. Yesterday, the ministry of health dental team visited Nakama to offer their services.

Villager Savenaca Vakavotu, 24, was very pleased with the leadership provided by their turaga-ni-koro.

“It has benefited the whole village in getting dengue fever down,” Mr Vakavotu said.
