Vanzara wears ‘Armour of God’ on liberation day
AHMEDABAD: Retired IPS officer DG Vanzara once wrote a letter from jail which said, “Narendra Modi is my God..” On Wednesday, as he stepped out of jail after eight years, Vanzara was dressed in a ‘Modi Jacket’, apparently as a mark of his respect for Modi.
“These clothes inspires a feeling of nationalism in me,” said Vanzara when asked about the Modi jacket he wore over white trouser and a shirt.
Curiously, Vanzara seemed inspired by Modi’s oratory. He used Modi’s trademark words such as ‘Mitro’ and ‘Bhaiyo ane Behno’ in his speech, also elaborately gesticulating with his hands, just like his ‘God’.
His poetic avatar found expression when he was asked what his fight since 2002 has been. “Yeh diya aur toofan ke beech jang thi.” He further explained, “Fanoos bankar jiski hifazat hawa kare, Who shama kya bujhegi jise roshan khuda kare’, Vanzara thundered after his release.
Vanzara’s supporters thronged the jail premises from 10.30 am more and more gathered as time passed. Most supporters were his community members, a few police informers also were seen at the jail compound.
The moment Vanzara stepped out of the main gate of Sabarmati Central jail, his supporters started bursting crackers, catching even his security personnel by surprise. Vanzara hopped on to the bonnet an SUV along with MS Bitta, chairman of All Indian Anti Terrorist Committee who came all the way from Punjab to greet him. Vanzara also pulled his wife Gauri on to the SUV.
“A police officer has no religion and he should only be loyal to his duty. We did the same thing and are proud that we acted in national interest,” said Vanzara.

Bitta said he takes pride in siding with Gujarat Police who ‘gave a fitting reply to terrorists’. “I agree with Vanzara that Gujarat cops were victim of politics,” added Bitta.
Vanzara’s wife Gauri said that life has changed a lot since her husband’s arrest. “We faced a lot of difficulties and now I will live with him in Mumbai.”
No Rajniti only Rashtraniti
D G Vanzara, while talking to the reporters, said he believes in Rashtraniti and not Rajniti. However he said that politics is involved in every aspect and you can’t stay aloof from politics. “I am a soldier and not a politician,” added Vanzara.
94-year-old Gordhan Modi came to greet Vanzara.
94 year old Gordhan Modi, from Mehsana came to greet Vanzara at the jail premises. “He has helped my son study and I am grateful to him,” he said.
“It is Vanvas after Jailvas”
Vanzara’s son Pruthvi said “It is Vanvas after Jailvas”. He added that his father has to mark his presence before the Mumbai CBI every second day and at Ahmedabad on every working Saturday. “He has been asked to stay in Mumbai and hence after a long jailvas it is vanvas for him. We will approach the court of law to relax the bail conditions,” added Pruthvi.
“He has done good things in Illol”: Ahmedbhai
There were a few Muslims supporters of Vanzara who came from his native village, Illol, to greet him. “He has done good things in Illol and we have hence come to greet him,” said Ahmed Bhati. Ironically, Illol is the place where the remains of Sohrabuddin Shaikh’s wife, Kausarbi, were destroyed.
