Akhil Herwadkar hit an impressive 161 that put Mumbai in a commanding position against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Mumbai recovered from a disastrous first innings, to reach 376 for seven in its second essay.
Resuming on 87 for one, Herwadkar and Shreyas Iyer resurrected the Mumbai innings.
The Delhi pace battery — Pradeep Sangwan, Parvinder Awana and Sumit Narwal — looked frustrated as the Mumbai pair stood steadfast.
This resulted in a 177-run partnership for the second wicket.
Herwadkar received a lifeline on 74 when second slip Unmukt Chand spilled a simple catch off Narwal.
Shreyas (82) was caught at extra-cover by Mithun Manhas after a mistimed drive off Awana.
Herwadkar missed a double century, top-edging an attempted sweep off Delhi’s left arm-spinner Manan Sharma.
Despite missing out on a personal milestone, his 161 (272b, 25x4, 3x6) ensured Mumbai’s recovery.
