Raipur: Five Naxals, three of them carrying cash reward, on Wednesday surrendered in insurgency-hit Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh citing disappointment over exploitation of lower rank cadres and women by senior leaders.
The cadres, working at different capacities of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) in the jungles of Bijapur, turned themselves in before senior police officials this afternoon, Bijapur Superintendent of Police (SP) KL Dhruv told a news agency.
Of the surrendered outlaws, Somdu Ram Poyam (30), a divisional commander rank cadre, was a prominent Naxal leader handling the 'communication wing' in Western Bastar division of Maoists, the SP said.
Poyam was tasked with repair and maintenance of electronic gadgets used in communication purposes and looking after the communication system within the outfit, he said, adding that he was carrying a reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head.
Lacchuram Bhaskar (27) and Somaru Podiyami (22), who were carrying rewards of Rs 3 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively, are two other important rebels among the surrendered, he said.
While Bhaskar was a deputy commander of platoon number 2 of military company of Maoist, Podyami was a local operation squad member (LOS), the SP said.
Rest of the surrendered - Lachhu Hemla (18) and Sukhram Podiyami (19) - were lower rung cadres and active in the region, he added.
In their statement, surrendered ultras said that senior leaders were allegedly exploiting lower rank cadres in the region and extorting money from poor villagers, the SP said.
As per the policy of Chhattisgarh government, necessary assistance will be provided to them, he added.
