A special team of the city police arrested six persons in connection with the murder of S. Sreejith, a worker of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], at Morikkara, near Kakkodi on the outskirts of the city on Sunday night.

Those arrested are M.R. Sandeep, 20, of Kakkodi; P.T. Rahul, 18, of Mokavoor; G. Kiran, 18 of Kunduparamba; Jithin Raja ka Unni, 18, of Parambath; H. Amithas of Marikunni; and V.S. Navaneeth, 19 of Punnassery.

The first five accused were arrested from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, either on Monday night and early on Tuesday, and the sixth accused from his house on Tuesday morning.

The team led by the Kozhikode Deputy Commissioner of Police D. Sali and the Nadakkavu Circle Inspector Moosa Vallikkad made the arrests.

“There are 13 accused in the case. All of them took part in the action. The remaining accused persons have been identified and hopefully they will be arrested soon,” Mr. Sali said.

Replying to a question, the DCP clarified that “It is not a political murder. Personal enmity led to the killing.”

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) Jossy Cherian further said that the accused had hatched a conspiracy to execute the murder.

The incident was the animosity between Sreejith and Sandeep for quite sometime. “Definitely this angle is also being probed,” he added.

The accused were charged with sections 302 (murder), 142 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting) and 149 ( Every member f the unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the Indian Penal Code.
