State’s Olympic dream realised: Minister

Minister for Sports Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has said that the dream of Kerala to qualify to represent the country in the 2016 Olympics has been fulfilled through the 35th National Games held in the State. “Four sportspersons from Kerala have qualified for the Olympics and that is a big achievement.”

Mr. Radhakrishnan was speaking at a gathering here on Tuesday after inaugurating a function to commemorate the 12th death anniversary of Congress leader Kottaraka Gopalakrishnan.

“The sportspersons from Kerala excelled by competing with 28 States and even the strong Services team,” he said. Mr. Radhakrishnan said it was unfortunate that anything done in the State with good intentions was quickly cooked into a controversy. “One cannot expect the government to call a general body of all the 3.5 crore people of the State to take a decision.” The National Games was not a political extravaganza. Everything was organised with a sportsman spirit.

He said there used to be a time when campus politics was seen as a process of strengthening democracy. At that time, the KSU was a model in many respects. But today things had changed with some sections introducing the cult of violence in campus politics.
