CHARLOTTE, N.C. — John Spahn, vice president, sales finance at Wells Fargo Retail Services, will provide an overview of the current environment for consumer finance across the retail industry at Furniture/Today’s Finance Workshop, to be held Wednesday and Thursday, March 25-26.

The inaugural event, part of Progressive Business Media’s growing series of educational events, will be held at the Hilton Charlotte Executive Park here and will also include sessions on second and third-tier consumer finance options as well as a keynote presentation on the current market for investment capital presented by Philipp Lisibach and Jack Hasler from international banking leader Credit Suisse.

In addressing primary consumer finance options, Wells Fargo’s Spahn will offer insight into the current climate for consumer finance, addressing key compliance issues that can play an important role in retailer consumer finance programs. He will also look at the opportunities presented by private label credit cards and address best practices in primary consumer finance programs.

In the wake of the Great Recession, changes in bank lending practices created a fundamental shift in consumer finance practices, pushing many consumers out of prime lending tiers, and forcing significant segments of consumers out of the lending market altogether.

The emergence of new consumer finance options, including second-look financing, rent-to-own and lease-to-own options are serving to create fresh opportunities for retailers looking to grow their business and improve sales conversion rates.

A networking event is set for the evening of March 25, and workshop sessions will take place March 26. The conference will offers a variety of sessions aimed at helping retailers maximize the effectiveness of their existing programs, while also opening up potential new revenue streams.
