Kedarnath temple to be opened for devotees on April 24

Despite facing adverse weather condition, NIM has been continuing the reconstruction works in the temple area.

The Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand will be opened for devotees on April 24 this year. The opening date of the shrine is announced on Shivratri at Ukhimath temple every year.

This year the state government has taken special efforts to give a new shape to the Kedarnath temple area which had faced the maximum impact of the Mid-June 2013 flash-floods.

Despite facing adverse weather condition, the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering’s team (NIM) has been continuing the reconstruction works in the temple area.

Currently, the team has undertaken the work of building protection wall along the river Mandakini which originates from the backyard of the temple. Several new cottages have also been built. “The new cottages will accommodate at least 1500 persons,” a source in the state government said.

In an apparent bid to restore the devotees’ confidence, Chief Minister Harish Rawat has planned to visit the yatra route of the Char Dham – Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri – by road. The yatra is considered to be backbone of the state’s economy. Sources said more than 40,000 devotees had visited Kedarnath temple last year.
