FWA completes King Richard III project

Cambridgeshire's Fairhurst Ward Abbotts (FWA) has finished the first phase of reordering works at Leicester Cathedral ahead of King Richard III's re-interment in March 2015.

The remains of the historic royal were found in a car park in Leicester in 2012 and FWA was appointed as main contractor on the 26-week programme of layout changes.

The company's teams in Huntington and Lichfield led the work, including the creation of a sanctuary, chapel and a walking space where the tomb will be placed. It also laid a new floor with underground heating.

Matt Webster, conservation director of FWA, said: "Our specialist team, including stonemasons, worked closely with the architects to deliver their vision, which has created a fitting tribute to Richard III.

"At the same time, the work has enhanced the Cathedral’s interior, improving its functionality for worship and events while also ensuring that its historic fabric has been retained.

"We're proud to have played a role in such an important project and feel very privileged to have created a resting place for a king."

FWA has also carried out work on Derbyshire's Chatsworth House, as well as Tamworth Castle in the West Midlands.
