Thane man accused of robbing his workplace jumps off moving train

In a bid to escape the hearing, a thane-based man, who is already under trial for robbing his former work place, jumped off the moving Mumbai-bound Rajendranagar Express while he was being brought back to the city by the Thane police on Monday.

According to the police, the 45-year-old accused, identified as Mohan Lal Dev, was working as a watchman in Yahama Showroom in Thane, where he stole money worth Rs 8 lakh from the safety locker. Dev had gone missing since one month and fled to his home town in Uttar Pradesh.

The investigations by the Thane police revealed Dev’s current location and sent a police team headed by one inspector and two constables to his hometown in Jabalpur to apprehend him. They raided his house situated on the outskirts of Jabalpur on Saturday and arrested him on the spot. They even recovered cash worth Rs 2.5 lakh. The accused was presented before a local court and was supposed to be brought back to the city on Sunday.

The three cops accompanied the accused and boarded Mumbai-bound Rajendranagar Express. As the train left Jabalpur station, the accused told the cops that he wanted to go to the washroom. To keep a watch on the accused, two constables accompanied him.

As the trio reached near the door, the accused pushed them and in an attempt to flee, he jumped off the moving train. The constables panicked and pulled the chain to halt the train. They walked back to the spot where Dev had jumped off the train. After an hour’s search, Dev was found lying in the bushes. He was bleeding continuously and was rushed to the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose hospital in Jabalpur. The accused sustained severe injuries and his condition is said to be critical.

Senior inspector A B Kanhare from Jabalpur GRP confirmed, “The accused is in a critical condition. We have booked him for attempting suicide and preventing government officials from discharging their duty. Once he is out of danger, he will be shifted to Mumbai.”
