A newborn girl was abandoned by a woman and a man in front of an orphanage near Sulur Boat House at the outskirts of the city in the wee hours of Sunday.

According to the police, the watchman of that institution, Ponnuchamy (58), saw them leave the baby near the institution’s gate around 3.45 a.m.

On information from the watchman, the Singanallur Police and Anti Human Trafficking Wing Police went to the spot and rescued the baby.

They found a gold chain, a ring, Rs. 10,102 and a few sets of clothes near the baby.

Police sources said that the baby was in sound health and was handed over to the Childline 1098.

On a direction from the District Child Welfare Committee, the baby was taken to Families for Children, a home in Podanur.

The baby will be produced before the committee on Tuesday to decide on further course of action.
