For many years, the Government Higher Primary School in Mannagudda found it hard to get the required number of students for first standard. The number hardly crossed 10.
Then the Old Students’ Association stepped in and brought in change by organising school transport.
A vehicle now brings children of fishermen from Bangra Kulur, a place which is 2 km away and does not have a motorable road.
Children of construction labourers, watchmen and daily wage workers from Kodikal and Urwa Stores also take the bus to the school at 9 a.m. They return home in the same vehicle at 3.30 p.m. The association is paying Rs. 15,000 a month towards vehicle maintenance and the driver’s salary.
Headmistress Joyce Henrita says the initiative has helped improve the student strength.
The number of students in first standard has gone up to 30 this year. “Those who had dropped out for want of transport have rejoined the school,” she said. The school also doubles up as a crèche for younger siblings of students.
Among the 45 students who take the bus is eight-year-old Yellamma who brings along her two-year-old brother Chandra. “She is a regular student this year,” said Shashikala B.K., Yellamma’s teacher.
