Alangudi is a major town in Pudukottai district surrounded by clusters of villages which is why a weekly shandy is organised here on Thursdays. Many merchants market their products at this market. But it does not have adequate facilities except an old thatched shed causing great inconvenience to the public. I urge the authorities to construct sheds for the benefit of traders and customers.

K. Nandakumar,

Alangudi.

Registration of nominations

Nominations for savings bank and recurring deposit accounts, opened at the post offices, are not being made by depositors. Failure to make nominations will result in delay and avoidable expenditure to claimants in case of demise of depositors. Public and postal staff should ensure that nominations are made for all kinds of savings accounts.

Road safety

Though it is good to see sophisticated vehicles even on rural roads, it is sad to note that many human lives are lost due to negligent driving. Reasons for most of the accidents are over speeding, drunken driving, traffic violations and talking on cell phone while driving. All road users must follow road rules to make the roads safe.

Conduct fairs

There are lot of mutts in Thanjavur district. These mutts celebrate their founder’s day purely as a religious affair. Instead, they could conduct industrial or agricultural fairs which would be useful and in no way would they be violating their founder’s spirit of serving people. Their huge assets can be utilised for development programme for the people of surrounding areas.

Bus shelter

The local body authorities of Ullur have constructed an air-conditioned bus shelter at Chettimandapam for the benefit of commuters. A close watch need to be kept by the panchayat during night hours to prevent it being misused by anti-social elements.

Gauge conversion

Sufficient funds should be allocated for early completion of gauge conversion work in the Karaikudi-Aranthangi-Adirampattinam-Thiruthuraipoondi-Tiruvarur section. Gauge conversion of the line between Tiruvarur and Karaikudi is a long-pending demand of people of Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Sivaganga districts. This line covers Thiruthuraipoondi, Muthupet, Adirampattinam, Pattukkottai, Peravurani and Aranthangi. But the work is proceeding at a slow pace ever since it started in 2012.

A. Haja Abdul Khader,

Adirampattinam.

Traffic chaos

at bus stand

All vehicles are allowed to ply through the new bus stand in Thanjavur causing inconvenience to motorists, bus drivers and passengers. A separate lane inside the bus stand should be laid for free flow of traffic.

I.Gabriel,

Thanjavur.

For a clean earth

Clean air and water have become a distant dream especially for poor people. The authorities concerned should take effective steps to prevent diseases like swine flu on a war footing. Each and every citizen should take the responsibility for a cleaner earth.

R.Pichumani,

Thippirajapuram.

Welcome judgement

The judgement delivered by the Madras High Court bench in Madurai refusing to permit the use of orchestra for consecration of a temple at Mimisal is welcome. The judge has pointed out that only debate and discourse could be organised. The HR & CE department should issue circulars to this effect to all executive officers of temples.

R.S.Moorthy,

Karur.

One way traffic

Mothilal Street near bus stand in Kumbakonam is surrounded by fish market, SASTRA University, IT office, business establishments and private hospitals. It is always crowded and there is traffic congestion on the entire stretch. If one way traffic is implemented it would be convenient to commuters. The traffic should be diverted through the newly laid road near the bus stand on the way to John Selvaraj Nagar.

S.Kumaragurudasan,

Kumbakonam.

Expedite projects

The Chief Minister has written to the Union Railway Minister to expedite various pending railway projects. People want a direct train from Tiruchi to Bangalore and other major cities in the north.

A second coach factory can be established in the city without incurring any expenditure for land.

Coordinator, Citizen’s Welfare Association-Tiruchi,
