Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated an Acute Stroke Care Centre at Rajan’s Hospital established at a cost of about Rs. 1.25 crore.
The eight-bedded centre with intensive care facilities would go a long way in providing timely treatment to those who hit by strokes and prevent disability, Mr Kalam said in his address after inaugurating the centre recently.
Detailing symptoms such as face drooping on one side, weakness in one arm or leg, and difficulty in speech for strokes, Mr. Kalam said that strokes occurred when blood flow to the brain was blocked and people could lead a healthy life if they maintained a stress-free lifestyle.
Practice of meditation, inculcating the habits of reading and praying and taking morning and evening walks would help people to lead a healthy life, he said. He congratulated Dr Rajan for introducing advanced medical facilities in the backward district.
Mr. Kalam, who also inaugurated an auditorium and library, donated two books, ‘Beyond 2020, a vision for tomorrow’s India,’ which he co-authored with Y.S. Rajan, and ‘A manifesto for change: A sequel to India 2020,’ written by him and co-authored by his aide V. Ponraj.
K. Joseph Rajan, founder of the multi-speciality hospital, said that as the CT scan and MRI facilities were located close to the centre, patients who were hit by stroke could be given timely administration of clot dissolving medicine and saved from disability.
The centre had facilities for aggressive medical management, he said.
