SRH’s VVS Laxman: We wanted Amit Mishra back but last year we found that it was tough to play two spinners in the same line-up.

DD’s Hemant: Yuvraj is a very valuable asset and he brings in more than cricket. We were lacking some sort of icon player and Yuvraj will do that for us.

SRH’s Tom Moody: We were interested to get KP the batsman. He does have leadership capabilities but we looked at him as a batsman. Difficult to let Mishra go but we have other options in Karn. Mishra was the cherry on the game but we wanted to have other options as the auction goes on.

DD’s Hemant: We didn’t expect RCB to put Yuvraj in the auction and then go all out to get him. He brings value to our team and fits into our combination as do Mishra and Angelo. I think we have our combinations in place — we will still get the players we want.

That concludes the bidding for the first two sets. We will have a 20 minute break. Some solid bidding seen for Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik and Angelo Mathews.

Yuvraj Singh is up next. This should be fun. Fierce bidding between KXIP and Royal Challengers. Base price in Rs 2 crore. Slow and steady rise… all the way to Rs 8 crore. Before DD jumped in with Rs 9 crore. Once again… it was raised all the way to Rs 16 crore before they got him. Last time round, RCB paid Rs 14 crore for him.

Kane Williamson — NZ’s best batsmen — is up next and he goes to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 60 lakhs. The base price was Rs 50 lakhs.

Angelo Mathews is up next. And the base price is Rs 1.5 crore. Mumbai Indians start it off, Delhi Daredevils join them. And this is going to be a battle. DD thought they won it Rs 4.2 crore before Bangalore jumped in with a bid of Rs 4.5 crore. The battle resumed. It finally ended at Rs 7.5 crore and DD got him.

Murali Vijay is the next player out. And bidding starts at Rs 50 lakh. Opening bid by Chennai Super Kings — Vijay’s old team. KIXP take it to 55 lakh. Bit of to and fro — taking it all the way to 1.10 crore. Before Royal Challengers jumped in. Then KXIP jumped in again later to take it to Rs 2.6 crore. The bidding didn’t stop there though. It was pushed further up to Rs 3 crore.

Hashim Amla is up for grabs. Bidding to open at Rs 2 crore. And… the player is unsold.

Team owners are making their way to the bidding room. The auction will begin soon.

Rahul Dravid has revealed that Rajasthan Royals are not going to look for anyone in particular. But they have a reputation of making smart buys — so it will be interesting to see their strategy today.

This year, the franchises have a salary purse of Rs.63 crore each for the eighth season — a 5 per cent increase over last season’s purse.

The bidding process will serve as the prelude to the Pepsi IPL 2015 which will get underway on April 8. The player auction will be broadcast live on both SONY SIX SD and HD at 9:30 am onwards.

The auction will be conducted by Richard Madley, a professional auctioneer from England who has been conducting the player auctions since the inaugural IPL season in 2008.

Ahead of the auction, a total of 122 cricketers including 78 Indians and 44 overseas players have been retained by the franchises for the 2015 season, while six Indian cricketers have been traded during the window for player trade this year.

Hello and welcome to the live blog of the IPL 8 auction. Top cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Hashim Amla will be the star attractions of the auctions that will see quite a few Indian and International players going under the hammer today.

Last year’s most expensive buy, Yuvraj, who was picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs. 14 crores, will once again be one of the biggest names to hit the auction table this time around.
