Despite rain and snow, Kashmir highway through for one-way traffic

SRINAGAR : The national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was through for one-way traffic despite fresh rain and snow.   However, roads connecting dozens of villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) and highway connecting Ladakh region with the rest of the state remained closed due to snow.   The Mughal road, linking south Kashmir with Jammu region, also remained closed due to snow and slippery road conditions.   Fresh rain and snow has been recorded on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway since early this morning. Rain and snow was recorded on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel, Banihal, Shaitan Nallah, Ramban, Ramsu and Patnitop since this morning.

However, the highway was through for traffic, a traffic police official told UNI.

He said hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and trucks, mostly empty and oil tankers left different parts of the Kashmir valley for Jammu this morning.   However, the Srinagar-Drass, second coldest place in the world after Siberia, remained closed since December last year due to snow, particularly in Zojila area of the highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley.
