Four die in early morning fire in Pasay residential area

(Updated 2:42 p.m.) A predawn fire of undetermined origin razed at least 300 houses in a residential area in Merville Park in Pasay City Monday, killing four people including a woman who was four months pregnant and an 8-year-old child.

The fire at Barangay 201 had reached the general alarm as of 5 a.m., radio dzBB's Luisito Santos reported. In a report on GMA News TV's Balitanghali, fire out was declared at 8:57 a.m.

Many of the houses were made of light materials. The strong winds in the area earlier in the morning also aggravated the situation, some of the firemen said.

According to the report, most of the residents in the area were informal settlers. It was scheduled to be demolished next year. The area is near the boundary of Pasay and Parañaque Cities.

A separate report by dzBB's Mao dela Cruz quoted Pasay City fire marshal Chief Inspector Douglas Guiyab as saying the fire razed 300 houses.

Photos tweeted by dzBB's dela Cruz showed several houses destroyed in the the aftermath of the fire.

A YouScoop photo by @fatimalusung showed smoke from the razed residential area.

Several residents failed to save their belongings, the report said. — Joel Locsin/DVM/KG, GMA News
