Motijheel ducks get a coop to lay eggs
Hundreds of ducks that have been an integral part of the Motijheel compound have now got a concrete home. They have now got a ‘coop’ to lay eggs.
Kanpur Nagar Nigam’s chief engineer Tarun Sharma said the coop was constructed to provide ducks a comfortable place for breeding. Besides, it has also added to the beauty of the Motijheel. “Large numbers of people visit the place daily.
There are more than 250 ducks in the jheel. Keeping them in the coop will help not only beautify the place but also increase their population. The budget of the project was around Rs 1.5 lakh,” he said.
Ducks don’t have any breeding period. They can lay egg every day up to 260 days. Ducks lay eggs anywhere they want too. Duck eggs do not hatch unless they are incubated. Making a coop would apparently help in incubation of eggs and make its collection easy.
Motijheel is one of the oldest parks of the city. Rich in vegetation, the place is popular among nature lover, who love to sit in the vicinity and admire nature. White ducks make the view even more scenic by merely swimming in the lake. “In the morning hours, many people come to Motijheel to breath in fresh air. The place is home to hundred of ducks. Some give food to ducks. It is good that now these creatures will have a place to lay eggs,” a local said.
Meanwhile, Sharma further added that they have also proposed a plan to reconstruct the steep slope of the lake into a gentle slope. “We will be doing boulder pitching in the lake to prevent soil erosion. The slope of the lake has become steep. This is resulting in degradation of the lake and soil erosion. Roots of the trees on the banks of the lake have become week. Reconstructing the slope will help prevent erosion of soil, thereby preventing trees from falling. The project has been proposed. Things are in pipeline and it will take few months to start the work,” he concluded.
