NASHIK: The K K Wagh Polytechnic College has decided to organize counselling sessions for its girl students after one of its students committing suicide in her hostel room earlier this week.
The 19-year-old students from Telwade village of Baglan Taluka was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her hostel room on February 5. The incident came to light after two of her roommates came searching for her around 8.30pm.
Vidya Khapli, principal of the college, said the students who were the first to notice the girl hanging were immediately counselled and sent home for couple of days. “Other girls, who were left disturbed after the incident, have also been sent home,” she added.
Taking about the deceased student, Khapli said she had scored 80% marks in her first year, however, performed below par due to medical issues in her second year. “Students have been encouraged to speak up about issues bothering them,” she said.
“The college will invite a professional counselor to conduct sessions for students. There would also be sessions for teachers to bring about a friendlier approach towards students,” she said. The college has also initiated a mentor scheme where a single mentor has been allotted for 20 girls, she added.
