BHUBANESWAR: Noted musician Prafulla Kar and playback singer Chittaranjan Jena are among six prominent personalities who will get honoris causa (honorary degrees) from Utkal University during its forthcoming convocation on February 21.
Entrepreneur Subroto Bagchi, co-founder of IT company MindTree, will also get the honorary degree.
The varsity will also honour Indian-Americans Jogesh Pati (theoretical physicist who was born in Baripada) and Sthiti Kanta Das (biotechnologist) with the degrees.
Freedom fighter Prafulla Das, also noted for his fight to eliminate leprosy, has also been selected for the honorary degree.
Vice-chancellor Ashok Das declined to speak about the honoris causa selection. Ahead of the 46th convocation for the academic year 2013-14 on February 21, the varsity will hold a mini convocation to award gold medals, PhDs and post graduate degrees to graduates of the 2012-13 academic session on Sunday. "Since there was no convocation held last year, the students who graduated in 2012-13 will be awarded degrees during a special event on Sunday," the VC said.
