Orica-GreenEDGE captain Mathew Hayman signals intention to ride til he's 40

Canberra cyclist Mathew Hayman wants to continue riding professionally until he is 40.

The 36-year-old has signalled his intentions to ride for another two or three years, although the Orica-GreenEDGE captain said this would be the last year of two-year contracts as he did not want to get locked into a deal longer than a season so he could pull the pin when he feels the time is right.

Hayman has shown he is in good early season form, getting involved in several breakaways at last week's Tour of Qatar as he continues his build up towards the Paris Roubaix in two months' time – his main goal of the year.

"I don't know really – maybe two or three [more years] – but I've not made that decision yet," he told cyclingnews.com.

"This is going to be my last two-year contract and I've always had them, but as I see it, at my age, you've got to take it year by year because this isn't something you should be doing when you don't want to be here.

"You can't be in a race like [the Tour of Qatar] if you're not interested in being a professional rider.

"When that day comes I don't want to be locked into a two-year contract, but I still love it and I'm still enjoying it so, at the moment, I'll keep going until that day comes."
