Church condemns vandalism

February 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Delhi Archbishop Anil J.T. Couto, other church leaders and concerned parents have condemned the alleged vandalism and theft in Holy Child Auxilium School, Vasant Vihar on Thursday night.

“The latest incident reflects badly on the Delhi Police and the Home Ministry as the law and order situation continues to deteriorate,” said Archbishop Couto.

In an official communication the Archbishop has noted that the attack on the school is the sixth incident of attacks on Catholic churches and institutions in Delhi.

Delhi Catholic Archdiocese, spokesperson Fr. Savarimuthu Sankar welcomed the message from Delhi’s Chief Minister-designate Arvind Kejriwal condemning the incident.

Meanwhile, several worried parents of children rushed to the school minutes after news of the alleged attack broke. “It is very unsettling to have any incident occurring in schools. People have to understand that children and homes are places that are sacred and should be left out from any sort of violence. The rise in the number of alleged attack on churches and now a Catholic school is a cause of worry,” said Rekha Jain (name changed), whose child studies at St. Columba’s School.

A. C. Michael, former member of the Delhi Minorities Commission said: “I have visited the school and met the school authorities and Delhi Police officials who are looking into the incident. As of now the school authorities suspect it to be a theft case and want to wait till investigation is completed… ”
