Giridih police on Thursday morning destroyed huge quantities of illegal poppy plants that were being cultivated over two acres of farm land in Vishnutikar village under Gawan police station, about 80 km from Giridih headquarter.

DHANBAD: Giridih police on Thursday morning destroyed huge quantities of illegal poppy plants that were being cultivated over two acres of farm land in Vishnutikar village under Gawan police station, about 80 km from Giridih headquarter.
The illegal poppy plants were reportedly cultivated near the residence of Rajdhanwar CPI(ML) MLA, Rajkumar Yadav.

Consequently, we visited suspected areas and witnessed the huge quantities of poppy plants that were spread over an area of more than 2 acres.
Although, we destroyed all these illegal trees, we have launched an enquiry," said Giridih superintendent of police, Kranti Kumar Gadidesi, who lead the operation.Previously, an FIR was lodged on Wednesday evening against 14 villagers of Hirapur and adjoining villages of Shikaripara police station in connection with opium cultivation.TNN in over 150 acres of land, on Wednesday evening.
According to officer in-charge of Shikaripara police station, S K Suman, all the 14 accused who are at large, have been booked on the basis of the land records. The police believe that a Maoist network might be involved in the cultivation.
"Raids are being made to nab them all and bust the network involved in encouraging the cultivation," the OC said.
Opium crops spread over 150 acres of land in Hirapur village, were destroyed on Tuesday.
