The Shivamogga City Corporation in 2015-16 budget will earmark ample funds to adopt modern solid waste management practices, according to corporation Commissioner M.R. Ravi.

He was speaking at a consultative meeting on the budget here on Wednesday.

The corporation is contemplating to do away with the practise of dumping of the garbage into landfills.

It will adopt ‘zero waste management’ practices in phases under which every solid waste generated in the city will be recycled and re-used by using eco-friendly technologies. It has been planned to segregate the bio-degradable and non-biodegradable waste at the collection point itself. The possibility of establishing a pyrolysis plant in which garbage will be subjected to thermo-chemical decomposition is also being explored. It is possible to produce bio-fuel from the bio-mass using this method.

The Shivamogga District Chamber of Commerce and Industries has come forward to adopt this technology on an experimental basis to manage the solid waste generated on its premises, Mr. Ravi added.

A plant that produces fuel briquettes from the organic waste will be installed. The corporation will soon invite the expression of interest in this regard, he added.

Entrance gates

Mr. Ravi informed the meeting that Rs. 97 lakh had been reserved in the 2014-15 budget to construct entrance gates at six places in Shivamogga. Tenders for their construction will be floated soon. He added that eight residents’ welfare associations had come forward to manage public parks in their respective jurisdictions.

Pure water

Satishkumar Shetty, member of the Shivamogga Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedikegala Okkoota suggested that the corporation should allocate funds in the budget to supply clean drinking water to the residents. A state-of-the-art laboratory that regularly monitors the quality of drinking water supplied to the residents should be established on the premises of Krishnarajendra Water Works, the water treatment plant of the corporation near Gajanur, he added. Ashok Yadav of the Anna Hazare Horata Samiti said that the construction of commercial complex of the corporation on Nehru Road and at Vinobha Nagar locality was completed three years ago. The corporation has suffered financial loss owing to the delay in renting out the shops in these buildings.
