Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India had a surprise in store while introducing a diesel variant of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class in India, which till now was only available in the C200 petrol version.

The big surprise was beginning of local assembly of the Mercedes-Benz C200 petrol variant in India, while the just introduced C220 CDI diesel will for now be imported as CBU (Completely Built Units). The locally produced Mercedes-Benz C200 petrol will be assembled in India at luxury car maker’s Chakan plant and will carry a price tag of Rs 40.90 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The new C200 CBU was launched in November 2014 at Rs 40.90 lakh, but with the end of the excise duty cut on 31st December, 2014, the company increased its price by 4 per cent in January 2015. Now with the local assembly of the C-Class petrol, its price has been revised to Rs 40.90 lakh, passing on most of the localization benefit to the customer.

Speaking about the made in India Mercedes-Benz C-Class Kern said, “The commencement of the local production of the new C 200 Avantgarde petrol within three months of its India debut, reiterates our commitment of providing our customers fascinating products which are made in India.”

The Indian made Mercedes-Benz C200 is similar in terms of designs and features to the existing imported model. The few visible changes on the locally assembled Mercedes-Benz C-Class include a set of new 5-twin spoke alloy wheels on the outside and the cabin gets a different high-gloss brown walnut wood trim.

Unlike the diesel powered Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI which has been introduced in Style and Avantgarde variants, the petrol version is only offered in a single feature rice trim. The locally produced C200 will continue to feature optional equipment including Adaptive LED headlamps with Daytime Running Lights, panoramic sunroof, multifunctional steering, five driving modes, steering mounted gear paddles, ambient lighting, keyless entry, push button start, and Attention Assist.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class sports the same 1991cc inline four petrol motor, with power output of 183.5PS at 5,500rpm and 300Nm of torque at 1200-4000rpm. The motor powers the rear wheel through a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission with a claimed a 0-100kmph time of 7.3seconds, and top speed of 235kmph.

Apart from the Mercedes-Benz C-Class C200 petrol, the company also assembles the GL-Class, S-Class, E-Class, and the M-Class at the Indian facility. As the numbers and demand for diesel Mercedes-Benz C-Class increases, we are certain the C220 CDI will also be assembled in India.
