Techie gets 10 yrs in jail for forcing third wife to abort twice
CHENNAI: Three marriages, two abortions and several years of harassment later, a mahila court in the city sentenced a 37-year-old techie to 10-years rigorous imprisonment. The charge: Harassing his third wife and aborting her womb without her consent twice.
According to the prosecution, P Raja Mahalingam, 37, of Vadipatti, Madurai was working in an IT firm in Velachery.
After divorcing Kalaiselvi and Manju, he married Manimegalai, 21, at a temple in Vadipatti on March 23, 2009. His parents, A K Paul Raj, 62, and P Dhanalakshi, 59, along with a two-year old child born to Mahalingam and Manju, were living with Mahalingam in Velachery.
Manimegalai became pregnant in 2009. Mahalingam asked her to abort. When she refused, he gave her tea laced with a drug which resulted in the abortion. Two-years later, she became pregnant again. He forcibly took her to a hospital in Madurai and attempted to abort the fetus on July 30, 2011. She, however, managed to escape.
Based on Manimegalai’s complain, the Guindy all-women police registered a case against Mahalingam and his parents and arrested them. Judge Meena Sathish said the prosecution had proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt. The court sentenced Mahalingam to 10-year rigorous imprisonment and gave one year rigorous imprisonment to his parents. The court also slapped them with a fine of Rs25,000.
