My love affair with
Dalhousie goes back to the days when my father's office was in the area.
I was in school then, and used to look forward to summer and winter holidays so that I could visit his office and have food at Dalhousie para! What a feast I had right from breakfast and evening snacks with Baba's colleagues to lunch with him! And every time, I would be spoilt for choice.
Would I have ghoogni-toast or bhaat-maach?
Breakfast was puri-sabzi, lunch was usually chicken stew and butter toast with malpoa for dessert and evening snacks had to be fish fingers! I even insisted that Baba should pack biryani for dinner! The best thing about the food was its freshness. It was also pocket-friendly and tasty. Even while studying medicine, I used to eat there. And now, I often visit the area to get shoot permissions. So, the affair continues. Now, obviously because of the office-goers' increased health concerns, the vendors even serve brown rice or doi-chire! Unbelievable! But yes, it's such street food stretches that make a filling meal possible for just Rs 15. And it can happen only in Kolkata!
