Melbourne escapes scorcher
A fortunate change in the winds meant that the majority of Melbourne city missed a mid-week meltdown. The temperatures began to take off around Melbourne area as the northerly winds blew the heat into the city this morning. Temperatures peaked at 35 degrees for the airport, Essendon, Coldstream, Viewbank and Scoresby. Areas closer to the coast felt the southwesterly shift in winds earlier, putting a sudden stop to the rising temperatures. Within short distances the temperature differences were stark, as the seabreeze made its way through the city and surrounds. Within 10km from Viewbank to Olympic Park there was an 11 degree difference, and a 15 degree range from Frankston to Scoresby. The southerlies will settle in for the evening and into Thursday with a typically cooler day ahead. Most suburbs will see temperatures in the mid-twenties under partly cloudy skies. However the cooler weather will be short lived, with the mercury likely to bounce back from Friday with a three-day spell of the 30's, with afternoon showers and storms bringing some relief.
