February 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

The recently signed nuclear agreement between India and the United States will deny the victims of nuclear mishap compensation to be given by the supplier, according to S.P. Udayakumar, convener, People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy.

During an informal chat with reporters at Valliyoor on Tuesday after appearing before the court, Dr. Udayakumar said,

“After “cheating” the Bhopal gas tragedy victims by not giving them any compensation, both the governments had now given a legal backing in the guise of an accord.”

Congratulating the Aam Aadmi Party on its resounding poll victory in Delhi, he said the Delhi electorate had taught a lesson to the BJP and the Congress as the present Modi-led government was just following the footprints of the previous Manmohan Singh-led Congress government.

Dr. Udayakumar said anti-nuke activists would convene a meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on March 15 against the proposed expansion of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in which prominent political leaders of Kerala would participate.

After fisherman Bright of Idinthakarai refused to give his contribution to the anti-nuke agitations, he was attacked in 2013. In a case registered in this connection, Dr. Udayakumar and his associates M.P. Jesuraj and M. Pushparayan were cited as accused along with 19 others. Subsequently, the trio appeared before the court at Valliyoor on Tuesday.
