MUMBAI: The state government has decided to take action against Indian-born Booker prize-winning author Salman Rushdie for insulting Jnanpith award winner Bhalchandra Nemade.
Education minister Vinod Tawde termed Rushdie’s comment as “filthy” and said that the state will probe his insulting tweet and decide the course of action.
“The home department is thinking how to go ahead with action against Rushdie for using such language against Nemade,” he said.

Nemade, the winner of the 50th Jnanpith Award this year, had raised questions about the literary merit of some of Rushdie and V Naipaul’s work, both writers of Indian-origin settled in the UK. Angry over Nemade’s comments, on Saturday, Rushdie, using an expletive, tweeted, “Just take your prize and say thank you nicely. I doubt you’ve even read the work you attack.”
