A leg-up for tribal area development

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Monday inaugurated a special project aimed at sustainable development of select tribal areas in the State.

Mr. Chandy said Rs.150 crore had been earmarked for the project under the additional tribal sub-plan fund of the Scheduled Tribe Development Department.

The project would be executed in Panamaram, Thirunelly, Pulpally, Noolpuzha, Mepadi, and Mupainadu grama panchayats in Wayanad district.

Parappa block panchayat in Kasaragod district, Iritty block panchayat (Kannur), Chalakudy block panchayat (Thrissur), Devikulam block panchayat (Idukki), Nilambur block panchayat (Malappuram), Kuttichal grama panchayat (Thiruvananthapuram), and Chittur and Attappady block panchayats in Palakkad districts would be covered in the initial phase.

The State and Central schemes of the Scheduled Tribe Development Department would be integrated for the purpose. Regional committees would be constituted for implementing the project and the representation of departments and people’s representatives would be ensured on the committees.
