Protest on Delhi-Jhajjar highway over dental student’s suicide

On Feb 5, Payal Godara committed suicide by hanging herself herself from the ceiling fan of her hostel room.

Over 300 students of SGT Dental College in Gurgaon’s Chandu Budhera Village protested on the Delhi-Jhajjar highway, demanding the resignation of principal Kamlesh Kohli, Head of Medicine Department Amardeep Singh and the hostel warden after a 22-year-old medical student committed suicide on the hostel premises last week.

On February 5, Payal Godara committed suicide by hanging herself herself from the ceiling fan of her hostel room.

Payal’s family and friends have alleged that she did so because she was deliberately failed in a subject. Even though a suicide note was found, sources close to the girl said it was tampered with. Payal was called to the Head of Department’s office on the morning on February 5, the classmate told Newsline.

“We believe that the suicide letter could not have been written in Hindi. Also, after we all assembled outside the room when we heard of Payal’s suicide, the warden and two other staff members were inside the room for an hour. Only after that did they call police. Why was there a delay?” Payal’s classmate said.

Claiming that the administration had been deliberately failing several students to generate more revenue through re-evaluation, protesters also demanded that the college returns fees with interest.

Festive offer

“Students have claimed that their demands are not being met. However, the family and the administration met students to reach a solution. As far as tampering with the letter is concerned, we are looking into it,” DCP (West) Kulvinder Singh said.

On the other hand, college registrar Prem Singh told Newsline that the HOD of Medicine has already resigned and the principal has been replaced. “The college has asked for 10 days to return the fees,” Singh said.

The registrar also alleged that the management was being deliberately framed. “Evaluation of answer sheets is not done by the university.

We are affiliated with Pt B D Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak, where papers are evaluated. So there is no question of manipulation,” he said. Based on the family’s statement, police booked the college administration for abetment to suicide.
