A year after issuing notices, BMC evacuates students from Siddharth Vihar hostel

The building is in a dilapidated condition and repairs have not been undertaken for years.

A year after issuing notices to the Siddharth Vihar hostel at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College in Wadala, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertook the evacuation procedure of the dilapidated structure on Monday. The hostel was one of the locations visited by Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte last year in April during his inspection on dilapidated structures in the city.

Anand Wagaralkar, deputy municipal commissioner (zone-II) said, “We have started evacuating students from the hostel, we will also fix a date for the demolition.” Wagaralkar, however, refused to comment on the delay and on providing an alternative accommodation to the students.

The ground-plus-three structure was built in 1964 and has been declared dangerous since 2011. The notice sent by BMC last year also said that the trustees were directed to pull down the hostel building in June 2011, through a notice. Due to non-compliance, the civic body had also launched prosecution in 2014 against the trustees in the Metropolitan Magistrate, 41st Court, Shindewadi, Dadar.

The hostel is said to have been used by famous poet and founder of Dalit Panther, a political party, Namdeo Dhasal as well as RPI chief Ramdas Athavale and many other RPI leaders.
