Resentment against BJP comes to fore in Jaisalmer-Barmer
JAISALMER: In the panchayat elections held recently in Jaisalmer-Barmer districts, people’s solidarity with former external affairs minister Jaswant Singh caused heavy damage to the prospects of BJP.
In Barmer, out of 17 panchayat samitis, Congress won on 11, BJP on five and independents elected on one seat, whereas in Jaisalmer's four panchayat samitis, Congress pradhan have been elected.
In both districts, BJP has been badly defeated and the main reason is that people of Rajput community in rural areas have not forgotten the insult to former Union minister Jaswant Singh, as the BJP had denied him ticket in the Lok Sabha elections. Whenever these people get a chance, they shout slogans against BJP.
The height was on Saturday when at Sam panchayat samiti in Jaisalmer, Congress' Usha Rathore was elected and people of Rajput community while taking out a procession shouted slogans that they will take revenge on Jaswant Singh’s insult and even had put banners mentioning the same.
It is to be mentioned that at Sam panchayat samiti, generally the Pradhan has been of BJP and even members used to be of BJP, but this time a Congress pradhan has been elected.
