Amboli murder victim's brother disappointed with slow 'fast track' trial
MUMBAI: The family of one of the victims of the 2011 Amboli double murders is disappointed with the slow pace of trial and is seeking public support to revive the matter.
Reuben Fernandez and his friend Keenan Santos were killed by a group of men who allegedly molested their women friends outside a restaurant at Amboli Naka. Keenan passed away November 20, 2011 while Reuben died November 31.
Reuben's brother Benjamin who now lives in the Netherlands has posted a message online urging a speedy trial in the case. ""We were expecting the fast track court to wrap up the case in a year's time. We are trying to get public opinion rolling again and it has to be bigger this time around. (Keenan and Reuben were) men who took a stand not for themselves but for others dearest to them. And they would have done it for any other innocent life as well. For too long have we patiently endured the judicial system in India, (but) now it's been too long. And it's time for us to stop having patience. Justice delayed is justice denied,'' he wrote.
Benjamin addressed his posts to prime minister Narendra Modi as well as chief justice H L Dattu.
Keenan's father Valerian Santos said, ""I agree that justice must be expedited. We are getting dates from the court at a certain time span. But I suppose the law takes its course. We wish to maintain a low profile."" Santos was intimidated by women relatives of the accused during his court appearances and has since received police escort during hearings.
The parents of Reuben and Benjamin do not attend court appearances.
