GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) for a collaboration in marine science research.UMT vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Ibrahim Komoo said the agreement was important and historic as it would bring together scientists from both universities to work on research in marine science, biodiversity and biotechnology as well as marine archaeology, a new academic field.

He said USM and UMT would be pioneers in conducting studies on marine archaeology, with the first one on the discovery of the Japanese ship 'Awazisan Maru' which sank during World War Two in the South China Sea.

Speaking to reporters after witnessing the MoU signing at the Dewan Polis Marin in Batu Uban here today, Ibrahim said marine archaeology was not a new field of study but was new in this country.

"It did not develop here because we did not have the facilities, but now we have ships which are equipped with all kinds of research equipment such as the RV Discovery, and USM has an archaeology centre with experts in the field," he said.

Ibrahim said besides marine archaeology, the collaboration would also see USM and UMT working on joint research on oyster rearing and coral cultivation.

Meanwhile, on the Scientific Expedition Series I: Melaka Strait 2015 which was launched on Jan 31, Ibrahim said the crew would stop in Langkawi on March 1. He said the expedition would conduct research on important marine environment and ecosystem in the Melaka Strait.

The expedition is also a platform to show to the public that the UMT was a top university which focused on marine science and aquatic resources. – Bernama
