Police say Ambareesh confessed to having committed the crimeon February 5.

Ambareesh (20), a resident of Cholappanahalli, was arrested on Sunday evening on charge of raping and murdering of an eight-year-old girl in Sulibele village in Hoskote on February 5.

After police released the sketch of the suspect, residents of Emuttasandra village on Shidlaghatta Road recognised the man and tipped off the police about his whereabouts. The sketch of the suspect had been made based on the footage of the CCTV camera that recorded the gruesome incident.

Bengaluru Rural police rushed to the spot at around 4.30 p.m. on Sunday. When Ambareesh was trying to flee from the place, he fell down and was injured, and is now undergoing treatment at a hospital.

“The suspect is a construction labourer and an alcoholic. During the interrogation, police claim he confessed to having committed the crime. We have recovered the clothes he was wearing when he left home that day. They have blood stains, and they have been sent for forensic examination,” said B. Ramesh, Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru Rural. Ambareesh had not gone to work on February 5 as he was binge drinking since the previous day. He was loitering around in the Pillagumpa Industrial Area when he found the girl walking by. He dragged the child into a shed and raped her. He allegedly smothered the girl to death in an attempt to muffle her screams. The girl’s body was found in an industrial shed in Pillagumpa industrial area on February 5.

Police found a CCTV camera recording of the man dragging her into the shed. The footage was from the CCTV camera installed by a private gas agency opposite the shed. Police had released the video, developed a sketch and put up billboards in the surrounding villages, which eventually led to the suspect’s arrest.
