Young talent heralds ‘spring’ for Jammu’s music tradition

JAMMU, Feb 7:  Under the emphasis to link holding of its annual calendar of regular events with special days marking change of seasons, festivals, socio-cultural and historical events related to our collective cultural heritage, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages organized a musical program to celebrate the onset of Basant-the Spring Season, at the K L Saigal Hall, here today.
True to the spirit of spring season where new sprouts symbolize renewal of life rhythms, the music program featured  young and budding artists of Jammu who with their enthusiastic singing raised the hope for a bright future of ongoing rich tradition of music in winter capital.
The compositions sung by young singers included the selected songs and poems of eminent poets like Ram Nath Shastri, Padma Sachdev, Virendra Kesar and Gianeshwar. Those who sang on the occasion included Indu Bala, Shushmita Banerjee, Versha Jamwal, Azad Fangotra, Shiv Sharma, Sonia Mehvish and  Shubham. The artistes who gave accompaniment were Neeraj Verma on Tabla, Sunil Sharma on Flute, Vicky Gill on Synthesizer, Sahil Jasotra on Octopod and Brij Mohan, on Harmonium.
V. K. Samyal, Station Director Radio Kashmir Jammu, the chief guest, while emphasizing the need of knowledge of basics of classical music he said that some efforts are required to give ‘swar gyan’ to young talent by way of holding workshops etc. Prof. Lalit Magotra, who presided over the function, said that it is a matter of pleasure that Jammu region now has become a place of festivals of literature and music and K.L Saigal Hall has become the centre of such activities. He also complimented J&K Cultural Academy and said that since last year the number and standard of Academy activities has been raised which deserves a great applause.
Earlier, Haroon Rashid, Secretary, Academy, in his welcomed address said that Basant Panchami has its distinct cultural importance in Indian Society. Dr. Arvinder Singh Amn, Additional Secretary presented vote of thanks. The program was were conducted by Reeta Rani Kharyal, Assistant Editor, whose artistic recitation of Padma Sachdev’s free verse was highly appreciated.
Gianeshwar, Prof. B.S Bali, T. S Premi, Dr. Javed Rahi, Dr. Farooq Anwar Mirza, Prof Nirmal Vinod, Mamta Raina, Krishan Lal Mast, G.R. Harsat Gadda, prominent citizens, writers, poets of Dogri, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Kashmiri and artists were present on the occasion.
