MNS to take a poll on retaining playground

The voting will be held over three days from February 7 to 9.

The city corporation’s ambitious plan to add a new wing to Byculla’s Bhau Daji Lad museum has hit another roadblock. Taking the democratic route, Maharahtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporator Samita Naik will be conducting a ‘poll’ where residents from Mazgaon to Kalachowkie will be asked to vote for the playground next to the museum to be incorporated in the expansion plans or not. A ballot box will be placed in the ground and forms will be distributed to people to voice their opinion. The voting will be held over three days from February 7 to 9.

Led by Raj Thackeray’s MNS, locals from the area have already voiced their dissent against the corporation’s plan of usurping the playground to create a parking lot and a landscaped garden as part of the expansion plans.

“I have tried to raise the issue with Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte and the corporation but the Shiv Sena being the ruling party is not taking the issue seriously. It is the only playground in the area where children play frequently. If it is usurped by the museum, what will these children do?” Naik asked. The corporator said that though she was not against the museum’s development plans, she would continue to fight for the playground to be excluded from the project.

After the three-day voting, Naik will be drafting a report on the results that will be submitted to Kunte to take further action. The corporator is also expected to raise the issue again in the general body meeting of BMC on February 10. Naik said that she had displayed banners across the area asking people to vote.
