Line 3 Metro stations to close for 13 days

FOUR stations at the northern end of Metro Line 3 will be closed for 13 days this month to allow for the expansion of a train depot.

Jiangyang Road N., Tieli Road, Youyi Road and Baoyang Road stations will be out of operation from February 16-28, the city’s subway operator Shanghai Shentong Group said yesterday.

The depot is being extended to make room for 35 new trains that are set to arrive in the second half of the year.

Along with the 28 trains already in service, the new rolling stock will help reduce interval times on the northern section of the busy line, Shao Weizhong, vice president of Shentong Group, said.

By July, the waiting time for trains on the section of line between Jiangyang Road N. and Changjiang Road S. will be cut to 10 minutes from 15, and to 7 or 8 minutes by the end of the year, he said.

“The move comes in response to calls from people living in Baoshan District, who have long complained about the lengthy intervals between trains, especially during peak periods,” he said.

With the closure of the four stations, Shuichan Road will serve as the temporary northern terminal for Line 3. To handle the extra passenger traffic, people will be allowed to enter the station only via Exit 2 and leave via Exit 1.

A free shuttle bus service will be provided to ferry passengers to their final destinations.

The service along the remainder of the line will be unaffected by the station closures, the company said.

Also yesterday, Shentong released details of the extra Line 2 services it will provide during the Spring Festival holiday.

Until Match 15, extra trains will leave Hongqiao Railway Station at 11:04pm and 11:30pm, stopping at Hongqiao Airport T2, Songhong Road, Zhongshan Park, Jing’an Temple, People’s Square, Century Avenue and Longyang Road.

Three late services will also run between Guanglan Road and Yuandong Avenue, with the final departure pulling out at 10:24pm, 24 minutes later than normal. Shanghai’s Metro network is gearing up to carry an expected 7.2 million passengers per day during the 40-day Spring Festival travel peak that started on Wednesday and will continue through March 15.
