Investigating ‘role of Dawood’ in Iqbal Kaskar’s extortion case, cops tell court

The court Wednesday remanded Kaskar to police custody till February 6.

The Byculla police Wednesday told the court that they are “trying to investigate the role of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim” in an alleged extortion case in which his brother Iqbal Kaskar was recently arrested. The magistrate was hearing the police’s plea to extend Kaskar’s police custody. Kaskar was arrested on February 3 for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 3 lakh from a real estate agent in Byculla and assaulting him.The court Wednesday remanded Kaskar to police custody till February 6. “We want further remand to know if Iqbal Kaskar committed the extortion at the behest of his brother Dawood Ibrahim and if there are any more persons involved,” the police argued.

The Byculla police have also added fresh charges against Kaskar including, section 387 (for threatening to kill to commit extortion), 342 (wrongful confinement), 327 (causing hurt to extort property) and 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Kaskar’s lawyer, Shyam Keswani argued that the fresh charges were added as an “after thought” by the police as the earlier charges were bailable offences.

“This a fabrication and an afterthought by the police and shows the viciousness of the police officer. These charges were not mentioned in the first FIR. They must have destroyed the first FIR and fabricated a new one,” Keswani argued.

Moreover, Keswani contented that no money or property was retrieved from Iqbal. The police sought the extension of custody “to extract the call data records of their cell phones and to examine footage from CCTV cameras in Kaskar’s house”.

Explaining the incident, the police submitted that the victim had received a phone call on January 30 that Kaskar wanted to meet him. When the victim did not meet him, Shabbir Sheikh, the co-accused in the case picked up the victim and took him to Kaskar’s house. “Once there, Kaskar demanded Rs. 3 lakh from the victim. When the victim refused to pay, both men hit him in the ears and threatened to kill him if he did not pay up within seven days. Over the next two days, the victim received treatment at JJ Hospital and Nair Hospital and complained of hearing loss,” read the police remand copy.

The victim registered a complaint at Byculla police station on February 2, which was transferred to JJ Marg police station the same night.
