Moreover, Keswani contented that no money or property was retrieved from Iqbal. The police sought the extension of custody “to extract the call data records of their cell phones and to examine footage from CCTV cameras in Kaskar’s house”.

Explaining the incident, the police submitted that the victim had received a phone call on January 30 that Kaskar wanted to meet him. When the victim did not meet him, Shabbir Sheikh, the co-accused in the case picked up the victim and took him to Kaskar’s house. “Once there, Kaskar demanded Rs. 3 lakh from the victim. When the victim refused to pay, both men hit him in the ears and threatened to kill him if he did not pay up within seven days. Over the next two days, the victim received treatment at JJ Hospital and Nair Hospital and complained of hearing loss,” read the police remand copy.

The victim registered a complaint at Byculla police station on February 2, which was transferred to JJ Marg police station the same night.
